There are hundreds of wineries in California’s Napa Valley offering visitors a chance to sample a wide range of delicious, local wines. Most of the tastings are drop-in and informal, meaning no reservations are required. But a few wineries offer intimate tours and special events by reservation only that are well-worth the fee if you love wine, gorgeous architecture, spectacular views, and fine food.

In particular you’ll want to check out Hall, Darioush, and Quintessa wineries.

Last weekend I enjoyed a tour and private dinner at Hall Winery’s Rutherford location. Founded by Craig and Kathryn Hall – she’s the former U.S. ambassador to Austria — our wine and appetizer reception took place in the balconied home/welcome center, high up on a mountain road overlooking the valley.

Our group took a brief guided tour of adjacent vineyards (the bulk of Hall’s grapes and wine are grown and processed at their St. Helena location) then descended into the winery’s caves, which are lined with Austrian brick and highlighted by contemporary sculptures and paintings along the tunnel walls, from the Hall’s art collection.

Dinner took place in the cave’s private dining hall/reception area, on a huge table lit by a Swarovski-encrusted chandelier dotted with tiny lights.

The architecture of Darioush Winery is not to be missed; the estate is an homage to Persepolis, the capital of ancient Persia. Several private tours are available here, including the two-hour tour (for $300), with wine tasting and paired appetizers, through owner Darioush Khaledi’s private cellar collection.

Quintessa winery is another beautiful property that offers private, appointment-only tours that can be customized to include the vineyards, wine-making facilities, and caves. Tours are followed by a wine tasting paired with artisan cheeses.
