10 Towns to Visit this Summer

Rand McNally’s Best of the Road Rally revealed what 30 of the best small towns in America have to offer from the Friendliest to the Most Fun. If you’re looking for a scenic getaway or an all-American road trip, consider one of the Most Beautiful or Most Patriotic town finalists.

Most Beautiful

Coral Gables, Florida’s source of beauty lies in the local nature, architecture, and culture. The town is home to the renowned University of Miami, the historic Biltmore Hotel, and the world-class Fairchild Tropical Botanic Gardens. Visitors can savor time golfing at the country club, boating through waterways, relaxing at the Venetian Pool, or shopping at Merrick Park.

Marco Island, FL is celebrated for the Ten Thousand Islands off its coast and incredible sunset views. The town boasts an immense diversity of wildlife from dolphins to manatees to birds and offers jet ski, catamaran, and boat tours through the environment. This Gulf coast area features plenty of water recreation and great local seafood right on the beach.

Franklin, TN is a small, friendly town outside of Nashville full of Civil War history. The Main Street flows through small boutiques and eateries, a setting which provides a quaint, slow-paced feel. Franklin’s known for The Factory, a complex of 10 depression-era buildings that once accommodated four factories and now house antique and art shops, event venues, and restaurants.

Baker City, OR is nestled between the Elkhorn, Blue, and Eagle Mountains for majestic views of the great outdoors. The town offers tours down the Oregon Trail and the beautifully restored Geiser Hotel. Visitors are encouraged to try the local digs downtown particularly Barley Brew Pub.

Sandpoint, ID has a notoriously overwhelming view from the Long Bridge into town with Schweitzer Mountains creating the backdrop and Lake Pend O’Reille perfectly supplementing the setting. Visitors can take a ski lift up 6800 feet for the majestic view or try a boat cruise down below.

Pacifica, CA hosts parks and beaches with coastal, mountainous views and noteworthy sunsets. Only 15 minutes outside of San Francisco, the city cherishes its smaller town feel. Visitors love Rockaway Beach, the Pacifica Pier, Pedro Point, and Skyline Blvd.

Most Patriotic

Clarksville, TN is the proud home of the 101st Airborne Division. This town completely rallies around their military and wrote more celebratory reviews than any other town on Best of the Road. The city has volunteer welcoming patrons for soldiers returning from service and organizations like Bikers Who Care that support the troops. They even have children in a neighborhood color guard who help a veteran raise his flag on every holiday.

Peachtree City, GA is a residential area containing 90 miles of golf cart trails. The people here are friendly and welcoming, hosting honorary celebrations for fallen soldiers arriving at the local airport. There isn’t a local base, but citizens are proud of the fact that most have served or have family serving in the military. Locals have preserved WWII memorabilia including planes the local Dixie Wing still flies.

Williamsburg, VA houses the history of America’s birth with buildings from the 1600’s, citizens reenacting colonial times, and landmarks representative of our country’s lineage galore. The first chapter of American settlement took place here and today’s locals replicate and share this story with all who come.

Fort Leonard Wood, MO is a community of soldiers, civilian volunteers, and veterans alike surrounding one of the most prominent Army posts. The small town is united in patriotism and demonstrates service both overseas and in emergencies on American soil.

Rapid City, SD hosts both Mount Rushmore and the Crazy Horse Memorial, two must-see national landmarks. The town is as beautiful as it is patriotic, surrounded by the Black Hills, and is the home of Ellsworth AFB.

Emporia, KS prides itself in founding Veterans Day, which they celebrate with a full week of festivities. Locals support the troops and celebrate America with events and fundraisers. Tour the All Veterans Memorial in addition to other memorials, a museum, and the local zoo.

Tarpon Springs, FL – It’s all Greek to me!

Tuesday morning July 5th Leaving Gulfport and a quick trip to return the red SAAB convertible- thanks to the folks from Dimmitt for the parade loaner- we felt like King and Queen of the 4th riding in the parade!!Next stop Tarpon Springs- another amazing small town in Florida. Tarpon is an authentic Greek community with a population of about 25,000 known as the sponge capital of the world.

We were greeted by Sue Thomas, the President of the Chamber, who met us at Hella’s an award winning famous Greek restaurant that has been voted #1 “Where the Locals Eat”.

Our server, Takis, was a living commercial for Tarpon, he came straight from Greece and said he feels at home as he preserves the Greek culture through his grandmother’s cooking. He was proud to serve the combination platter of Gyro, Mousaka, Pastitsio, Dolmades, and tzatziki sauce.

It was all delicious and authentic-next came the traditional Greek salad which is the best we’ve ever had, and then the Broiled Octopus which we tasted for the first time but will definitely order again. The last thing Takis brought to the table was the Saganaki  (Flaming cheese) Opaa!  What fun!!

The mayor arrived and we talked for a minute about their town entering the best of the road next year and then went in to the bakery where we had a lot of trouble choosing from the amazing Greek pastries- we did choose the Napoleon and the Chocolate Kok for the road.

Side note- Sue Thomas, Chamber President, was from Costa Mesa, Calif.  So she offered some helpful hints for our visit there and wanted to come along. Looking forward to Tarpon Springs being one of the Best of the Road in 2012.

Next time it’s all about Lafayette,

Gulfport, FL – Day 2 4th of July 2011

We have to share this video with you. Rob Fowler of http://007computer.com/ did while we were here:

Clam Bayou Tour

http://kayaknature.com/

We meet Kurt Zuelseorf, owner of kayak Nature, at the Boca Ciega Yacht Club to start our adventure. Kurt’s “Bring Back the Bayou” waterway clean up program has recieved national attention as the trash totals are nearing 200,000 lbs…all removed from waterways using kayaks! The result of Kurt’s actions is a wonderful and amazing “Clam Bayou” that you really need to see. We were going to tour the bayou by way of kayak, which would have been fun, but instead

had the pleasure of touring Clam Bayou by means of Kurt’s new electric boat before it was even open to the public. It was an amazing tour. The boat seems to be quietly sneaking around the bayou allowing us to see an American Egret glide effortlessly over the mangroves… an Osprey closer than ever before… a  Night Heron watching intently as we glide silently by. It was fantastic and defintily recommended. Bye Kurt and Thanks!

Just to make sure we mention everyone here is a link to the Gulfport, Fl restaurants that have created a sampler platter especially for the Rand McNally Road Rally.

Stella’s

A healthy hearty breakfast with small town friendliness. We chose to try their Sampler Plate which included fried green tomatoes made with Chipotle Aioli Dipping Sauce, Hand Chopped Corned Beef Hash with One Quail Egg Southern style, Mini Biscuit & Gravy and Mini Lox. The Gulfport chef’s lack nothing on creativity, variety and style in serving beautiful and tasty meals. This was also a scheduled get together with the locals. Many people showed up to have breakfast with us. It was really nice. There is even a coffee mug rack on the wall that holds mugs belonging to the regulars. They just come in, grab their mug, and sit down. Stella’s replaces them after washing for the owners next visit. Now that’s community!

After breakfast we went to the beach to participate in the children’s sand castle building  and fishing tournament. It was a great time and there were kids everywhere having a blast.

Car Show – Complete with 2 SAABs

We were the stars of the car show with not one but two SAABs. There were so many cars there to look at. The line went on and on. Here is a video of some of the cars. It’s a little long but it had to be:

Lunch Omaddys with Press

http://www.omaddys.com/

Lunch at Omaddys with the press was a hit. We met representatives from area papers and had a fantastic lunch. Omaddys is on the beach and the view was beautiful. They, like 14 other restaurants in town, had a sampler platter in honor of “The Rand McNally USA Today Road Rally” and it was great.

We had a great time talking with the press and others from the community. We even got to meet the Chef, Wade Parrish, and Joe Guenther the manager and husband of Maddy, the owner.

Friends of The Fun Finders Lunch
Monday Lunch for Guests at Peninsula
No points earned, hospitality still at it’s best.

The staff at Isabelle’s Restaurant went above and beyond the call of duty. In fact it was not a duty at all but pure pleasure. It seems that creating an atmosphere where all guest feel welcome, relaxed and special is their motto. Several friends and supporters of ours, AKA the Fun Finders were staying at The Peninsula Inn and ready for lunch.  When lunch timed rolled around the owner, Alexandra Kingxett came to accommodate them. During this month “Sampler Platters” are available but not this day. The chefs, Bernie and Edgar made an exception and prepared just for our friends that very thing. It was beautiful and made our friends feel as though they were treated as royalty.

Here are the sampler entrees: Lump crab cakes with remoulade sauce, zucchini fritters with balsamic glaze, sour cream and red onion marmalade, fried green tomatoes with pimento cheese sauce. These chefs take everything into account, flavor, texture, color and presentation.

FYI: The restaurant name is after the resident ghost, Isabelle Jarel. She is a multigenerational member of Gulfport from the early 1950’s. Isabelle passed away unexpectantly in her early 50s. She has been spotted in her favorite color of powder blues on the 3rd floor of the Inn. She loves cats, parties and all the activities at the inn. She is very playful and her presence is felt often by guests.

Thank you to the staff for all they did to make the stay one to remember.

We are confident that all guests are treated exactly the same as our friends were treated. Try them out and experience for yourselves.

We stopped to cool off and make three stops in one spot. Gulfport’s diversity isamazing.

Parade  - SAABs Lineup and go

We were invited to be in the 4th of July parade while we were in Gulfport. It was an honor. We joined the parade with both our traveling SAAB as well as the red convertible loaned to us by Dimmit SAAB in Clearwater, FL. There was quite a crowd out to see the parade and they were all cheering for us as well as the others in the parade. This celebrity thing could get comfortable. Here is a video of us passing the stage:

Council Key from Mayor

After the parade Mayor, Mike Yates invited us up on stage to receive the key to the city. When we get home were going to come down and see how many doors it fits!

Dinner at Pia’s

http://www.piastrattoria.com/

More food at Pia’s Trattoria. This was a very relaxing atmosphere. Definitely Italian too. Here is an excerpt from their website which says it better than I can:

Pia’s Trattoria is the kind of sweetly earnest restaurant that you’d like to think unfurls fully realized from the ground. Just a kernel of vision, nurtured by sweat and love, fortified by some good basic ingredients and a healthy inoculation of Italian culinary know-how.

Fireworks

Finish the day with a fantastic fireworks show. Here is a video of the finale. You know, the part where they finally just throw a match in the rest of the box.

After a good nights sleep we woke up to the Tuesday Fresh Market. It seems like there is always something going here in Gulfport. There are produce stands and crafts up and down Beach Blvd. It just wonderful, I don’t know what else to say.

We had to stop by and say goodbye to Lori and thank her for all her help.

Time to get packed and off to Lafayette by Way of Tarpon Springs

Gulfport – FL’s Best Kept Secret, Part 1

Jim and Alex, Our Hosts - Peninsula Inn and Spa

Pulling into Gulfport we were met by Lori, owner of Sea Breeze Manor,  with open arms standing in the middle of the street in front of home of the next 2 days, thePeninsula Inn and Spa.

What a great location right in the middle of this “best kept secret on the west coast of Florida”. The town has a very eclectic feel to it. Covering only a bit over 2 square miles, it has a Key West atmosphere with a small scale intimacy. Two claims to fame is that there are no parking meters and everybody is in Island Time mode.

It could be described in many ways as the “Sampler City”. It has a sampling of people with families, retirees, a gender friendly presence and diversity of ethnic culture. It has a sampling of stores that range from craftsman to artsie-fartsy boutiques to food and many more. A total of 15 restaurants participated this past month with “Sampler Platters” added to their menu from June 23 to July 23 in honor of the Rand McNally USA Today Road Rally. They highlight their specialties in small portions. This has been such a hit that many of the restaurants will continue this feature.

Lunch our first day was at Peg’s Cantina. Her sampler plate consisted of a Mini Shrimp Burrito, Mahi Fish Taco and an Aztec Salad. All the senses were touched. Sounds great, looks great, smells great and tastes great. All and all a great combination. They have won severalmedals for their home brewed beer. To support the local farmers they have a farm to table menu of entrees for their clients. Their chef sautés, poaches and bakes but no frying. Peg’s Cantina is a healthy and fun eating place with a quaint pub atmosphere.

We spent the afternoon enjoying a walk around the down.  T and Me welcomed us in for a cup of tea and a healthy snack. What a wonderful place. They offer a fresh brewed tea (either hot or over ice), and a unique twist on ice tea called “FROST TEA” a fresh brewed tea slushy for the inner child in all of us. What a great way to take a break.

Gulfport has wonderful Art Village shared by many varied artists.

The Industrial Arts Center, a local non-profit 3-D arts education center, co-founded by Jackie Ballard, was ready for us. This was a Fun Finder delight. The art of glass blowing was in full swing and Jim noticed that I would really enjoy trying this out. Oh, yeah. What a team.

I got to make my own ornament from start to finish from spinning the glass on the rod in the oven, adding color(red, white and blue for the holiday), back to oven a couple of times and finally the blowing. It is a lot harder than it looks. I gave it all I had and finally have my piece to take home.

A wonderfully hospitable group again. They had made us a hand blown glass clown (we are the Parr Clowns) to take as a souvenir. Thank you, Jackie.

A brief stop at Owens forge to see his metal art and on to more food.

A cool down time was in order so we enjoyed some Ice Cream at Yummy’s. It is  more than an ice cream shop. Their Sampler plate was a ½ Italian beef sandwich with a side of natural gravy, perfectly prepared Chicago dog and Yummy veggie wrap.

Lori took us  for a private shopping tour of the local shops including Can San, Antiques, Outpost, Bo Tiki, and Renee’s Domain.

Our Friend Jac'line

More FOOD and Fun at the “meet and greet” time at the Peninsula Inn.

Elvis Even Showed Up! and wearing a map hat!

What a theme. Everyone was wearing hats individually designed and all constructed from Rand McNally map pages. Way cute.

The buffet of Sample Plates was sponsored by four local restaurants.

A local band performed for the with various singer including Jim.

Amazing Story:

One local man we met was Sterling Magee. What a life story to tell. He is 72 years old and a guitar player of old. Raised a preacher’s kid in Mississippi and went off to be a musician. He played with Bo Diddley, Etta James, James Brown and toured with George Benson in the 80’s. At that time he nick named “Five Finger Magee”. But them he had a stroke while working as a “has been” in Harlem as a street musician. He was recognized in a Gulfport nursing home very withdrawn and tapping his foot to some music. The rest is history for Gulfport residents brought him to Peninsula Inn to relax and join in the music. Through time and the compassion of the community he regain his music memory and skills and now participates with the bands. A miracle from a miraculous community!

Seems like everyone knows everybody and that they take care of their own.

Can you believe more food coming with Dinner at Backfin BlueWhat can be said but crab, crab and more crab. Their Sampler Plate included Crab cake, Crab Imperial on portabella mushroom with fire raosted red pepper cream sauce and corn crab chowder.

Hope your mouth is watering for all this food. Next Jim and I loaded up for
Pinellas Hope, Tent City. See our “Home for the Fourth” post. (click here)

Wow! That was the first day! More on the 4th of July. It’ll be in our next post.

Keep On Laughing

Jim and Bonnie, The Fun Finders

Home for the Fourth!

We got into Gulfport, FL, close to home for us, on Saturday the 2nd and made the best of the opportunity to connect with friends.

Sheila Lopez -Sat Night

Destination Gulfport- Arrived Saturday afternoon

OMG, were we tired. We pulled an all nighter driving and stopping at McDonald’s parking lots for a few minutes sleep. How old are we? Sometimes we wonder. But we made it safe, sound and ready for a good long nap.

You can’t keep us down for very long and when we received a call from our friend Sheila with an invitation for dinner for 11:00 PM we accepted. More FOOD. I guess we did as many American’s do and went to a chain restaurant. The time was used for sharing our trip thus far, being encouraged by friends and taking a few moments to regroup. Gulfport tomorrow.

It was Sunday and we were in our home town. Connection and relationships are an important part or lives so we did as we normally do on Sundays and went to our home church, Anona UMC. For most churches FOOD is always involved and so we had a traditional Sunday church snack of coffee and donuts with our friends. It felt great to hear all the encouraging words from them. Two kinds of food were served – FOOD for the body and FOOD for the soul. This was a great way to begin a new week.

Exec. Minister Richard and our friend Pat

Pinellas Hope Sunday Night

To finish off day one in Gulfport we went to Pinellas Hope Tent City, a place we frequent often. We have been serving dinners there since the day they opened in December of 2007. We first started with the help of volunteers from our neighborhood. As this mission grew so did our need for help. We started a new homeless food ministry through Anona UMC, our home church. We now have 2 teams that feed 200-250 people Christmas, Easter and several times each month.

This night they honored us by hosting an Ice Cream Social. Of course Jim will not miss an opportunity to sing and encourage residents to participate in Karaoke with him. OMG! The quality and passion of some of these homeless residents was amazing. Tears of joy came easily as we watched them pour their hearts into singing. What a treat to serve ice cream sundaes to these people who rarely have them.

We left tired, refreshed in some ways and ready for a good night’s sleep. Wait a minute, we have to be up and ready to go out on a boat ride in Gulfport at 6:45 in the morning! Oh well, you can bet were not going to miss a boat ride. Were going to get a tour of Clam Bayou Nature Park.
